The Significance of Pavitra Ekadashi

Pavitra Ekadashi, also known as Shravana Putrada Ekadashi, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is especially dear to couples who long for a child. The word "Putrada" means "giver of sons", and the scriptures tell of kings who, after observing this vrat with full devotion, were blessed with worthy children. Its other name, Pavitra, means "pure", for the vrat is believed to purify the heart and the home.

On this day devotees fast, worship Lord Vishnu with tulsi and yellow flowers, recite his name, and give food and charity. Beyond the prayer for children, the vrat is kept by anyone seeking purity, peace and the blessings of Vishnu for the whole family. It is observed with the same care as other Ekadashis, with the fast broken at Parana the next morning.
