The story of Aja Ekadashi is tied to the famous King Harishchandra, known across the ages for never speaking a lie. Tested by the gods, he lost his kingdom, was parted from his wife and son, and fell to working at a cremation ground, yet he never abandoned the truth. Seeing his suffering, the sage Gautama advised him to observe the Aja Ekadashi vrat. By its power, his sins were washed away, his son was restored to life, and his kingdom and family were returned to him.
For this reason Aja Ekadashi is believed to free a devotee from even great sins and to restore what has been lost. Falling within the holy Chaturmas, the vrat is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Devotees fast, worship him with tulsi, recite his names, and give charity, praying for forgiveness, peace and a fresh start.
