The Day You Turn Around and Say Thank You

The word guru is not a title, it is a description. It comes from two Sanskrit roots: gu, meaning darkness, and ru, meaning the one who dispels it. A guru is simply whoever removed some darkness for you. On the full moon of Ashadh we stop and face that person.

The day is also called Vyasa Purnima, because it marks the birth of Ved Vyasa. He took the mass of Vedic hymns and divided it into four, the Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva, then handed one to each of four chief disciples so it would survive. He also gave us the Mahabharata. He is honoured on this day as the teacher every later teacher stands on.

It is not only a Hindu day. The Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath on this same full moon, and in Jain tradition it is the day Mahavira took Gautam Swami as his first disciple. Three paths, one idea: everything worth knowing reached you through somebody.

Why this full moon, of all days

The timing is practical, not only poetic. With the monsoon settling in, sadhus and Jain munis stop travelling and stay in one place for the four months of Chaturmas. A teacher who has been walking all year is suddenly sitting still and teaching. So this is the full moon when the guru is actually within reach, and disciples go to him rather than wait for him to pass through.

In Gujarat: the guru gets the puja, not the garland

Gujarat has a particular reason to hold this day close. The Swaminarayan Sampraday was born here, and in it the guru is not an idea but a person you sit in front of, so Guru Purnima is one of its biggest days: disciples perform their guru's puja and aarti, the same way the Lord is worshipped. Kalupur in Ahmedabad, the first mandir Swaminarayan built, fills up. Gujarat's Jain families keep the same day for their munis, who are just then settling in for Chaturmas.

How to Observe It

  1. 1 Bathe early and keep the day simple, sattvik food and an unhurried mind.
  2. 2 If your guru is living and reachable, go in person. Presence is the offering.
  3. 3 Do the guru puja: offer flowers, fruit, a cloth, and perform the padapuja of the sandals or feet.
  4. 4 Offer guru dakshina. It is not a fee, it is whatever you can give without being asked.
  5. 5 If you have no living guru, honour Ved Vyasa, or the teacher, or the parent, who first taught you something you still use.
  6. 6 Sit with what your guru actually taught. Read it, chant it, or simply practise it for a day.
  7. 7 Take charnamrit and prasad, and share the prasad rather than keeping it.

Mantra to Chant

गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः। गुरुः साक्षात् परब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः॥
Gurur Brahma Gurur Vishnu Gurur Devo Maheshwarah, Guruh Sakshat Parabrahma Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah
The guru is Brahma, the guru is Vishnu, the guru is Lord Maheshwara. The guru is verily the supreme reality. To that guru I bow.
Chant it 108 times, or once with full attention while doing the guru puja.

On Guru Purnima

Do
  • Say the thank you out loud, in person or in a message, not only in your head
  • Count teachers who never had the title: a parent, a first boss, an elder in the street
  • Give dakshina according to your means, quietly
  • Pass something on. Teaching one person is the truest dakshina
  • Read a little of what your tradition actually says, not only what is forwarded about it
Don’t
  • Do not make it a one day formality and forget the guru by Thursday
  • Do not measure devotion by the size of the gift
  • Do not use the day to argue about whose guru is greater
  • Do not skip the ones who taught you plainly because they were never called guru

Guru Purnima 2026: Common Questions

When is Guru Purnima in 2026? +

Guru Purnima 2026 falls on Wednesday, 29 July. It is fixed by the tithi rather than the English calendar: it is always the Purnima, the full moon, of Ashadh, which is why the date moves every year.

Why is it also called Vyasa Purnima? +

Because it marks the birth of Ved Vyasa. He divided the Vedic hymns into the Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva and taught them to four chief disciples, and he gave us the Mahabharata. Honouring the guru on his birthday is the point: he is the teacher the later teachers came from.

What does the word guru actually mean? +

It comes from two roots: gu, darkness, and ru, the one who dispels it. So a guru is not defined by robes or a title but by a simple test: did this person remove some darkness for you?

What if I do not have a guru? +

Then the day is still yours. Honour Ved Vyasa, whom the day is named for, and honour the people who taught you without the title: a schoolteacher, a parent, the person who trained you at your first job. The gratitude is the ritual.

Is Guru Purnima a fasting day? +

No, it is not a vrat. There is no fasting rule and no parana. It is a day of puja and gratitude: go to your guru, do the padapuja, offer dakshina, and keep the food and the mind simple.

How is Guru Purnima kept in Gujarat? +

It is one of the big days for the Swaminarayan Sampraday, which began in Gujarat and puts a living guru at the centre, so disciples perform their guru's puja and aarti; Kalupur in Ahmedabad, the first mandir Swaminarayan built, fills up. Gujarat's Jain families venerate their munis on the same day, as the munis settle in for Chaturmas.
