What is Choghadiya?

A Vedic time-division system splitting day and night into 8 periods each. Each Choghadiya is ~90 minutes — auspicious, neutral, or inauspicious.

Definition

Choghadiya (also spelled Chaughadia) is a Vedic time-division system. "Cho" = four, "Ghadiya" = ghadi (time unit). Each day and night is divided into 8 periods each — totaling 16 Choghadiya per 24 hours.

Each Choghadiya period is approximately 90 minutes (varies with sunrise/sunset). Day Choghadiya runs from sunrise to sunset, and night Choghadiya from sunset to next sunrise.
