The Day Ahmedabad Comes Out to the Street

On most days we go to the temple for darshan. On Ashadh Sud Bij the order reverses. Lord Jagannath, His elder brother Balabhadra and their sister Subhadra leave the sanctum, ride out on three wooden chariots and come to the people. Whoever cannot reach the Lord, the Lord reaches them.

Puri's yatra is the most famous one, but the largest in India after it is ours. The Jagannath temple at Jamalpur has been sending the chariots out since 1878, which makes the 2026 procession the 149th in that unbroken line. For Ahmedabad this is not a festival watched from far away on television. It passes the end of the street.

The scale is hard to put in words until you are standing in it. A line of fifteen to twenty elephants leads the way, the chariots follow, and the old walled city fills with people from before dawn until the chariots come home at night.

Saraspur: the Lord goes to His mosal

The chariots do not simply take a round of the city. Midway they halt at Saraspur, which Ahmedabad treats as the mosal of the deities, their maternal family home. There the local people feed the entire entourage, thousands of devotees, the way a family feeds guests who have travelled far. That is the most Gujarati thing about the whole day. The Lord is not only worshipped, He is fed like a son of the house.

Pahind Vidhi: the road is swept before He moves

No chariot moves until the path has been cleaned. In the Pahind Vidhi the road ahead is swept with a golden broom, and only then is the first chariot pulled. In Puri this is done by the descendant of the old royal house. In Ahmedabad it is done by the Chief Minister of Gujarat, which quietly says something the day is built on: before the Lord, whatever office a person holds, he takes the broom first.

How the Day Unfolds

  1. 1 In the days before the yatra the deities are taken to the Sabarmati for the Jalayatra, a ceremonial bath.
  2. 2 Ahead of the procession the Netrotsav is performed and the eyes of the deities are revealed to devotees.
  3. 3 On the morning of Ashadh Sud Bij a maha aarti is offered at the Jamalpur temple while the city is still dark.
  4. 4 The Chief Minister of Gujarat performs the Pahind Vidhi, sweeping the path with a golden broom.
  5. 5 The three chariots are pulled out one behind the other, with a line of elephants leading the way.
  6. 6 The yatra winds through the old walled city, where families wait at their doors from early morning.
  7. 7 At Saraspur the chariots halt and the local people feed the whole entourage before it moves on.
  8. 8 By night the chariots return to the Jamalpur temple and the Lord goes back into the sanctum.

Mantra to Chant

ॐ जगन्नाथाय नमः
Om Jagannathaya Namaha
I bow to Jagannath, the Lord of the universe.
Chant it while the chariots pass, or 108 times at home if you cannot reach the route.

On the Day

Do
  • Reach the route early, the crowd builds long before the chariots do
  • Take a turn at the rope if you get the chance, pulling the chariot is the darshan
  • Keep children and elders beside you and fix a meeting point in advance
  • Offer water to those walking with the yatra, they have been on their feet since dawn
  • Follow the route and the barricades the police have set
Don’t
  • Do not push towards the chariot, the yatra is long and everyone gets darshan
  • Do not carry valuables you cannot hold on to in a crowd
  • Do not park on the route, it is closed well before the chariots arrive
  • Do not treat it as a spectacle only, it is a darshan before it is a procession

Rath Yatra 2026: Common Questions

When is Rath Yatra in 2026? +

Rath Yatra 2026 falls on Thursday, 16 July. The date is fixed by the tithi, not the English calendar: it is always Ashadh Sud Bij, the second day of the bright fortnight of Ashadh, which is why it moves each year.

Which Rath Yatra is this for Ahmedabad? +

The 2026 yatra is the 149th. The Jagannath temple at Jamalpur has taken the chariots out since 1878, and Ahmedabad now holds the largest Rath Yatra in India after Puri.

Do we fast on Rath Yatra? +

No. Rath Yatra is not a vrat. There is no fasting rule and no parana to break. It is a day of darshan and seva: you go to the route, you pull the rope if you can, and you feed whoever is walking.

What is the Pahind Vidhi? +

It is the ritual sweeping of the road before the chariots move. The path ahead is cleaned with a golden broom and only then is the first chariot pulled. In Ahmedabad the Chief Minister of Gujarat performs it, where in Puri it is done by the descendant of the old royal family.

Why do the chariots stop at Saraspur? +

Saraspur is treated as the mosal of the deities, their maternal family home. The chariots halt there midway and the local people feed the entire entourage of devotees before the yatra moves on and returns to Jamalpur at night.

Who rides on the three chariots? +

Three chariots carry three deities: Lord Jagannath, His elder brother Balabhadra and their sister Subhadra. They come out together, which is why the day is as much about family as it is about God.
