WHAT IS VIKRAM SAMVAT?

India's Ancient Calendar Era

Vikram Samvat (VS) is the Hindu calendar era, founded by Emperor Vikramaditya around 57 BCE. It is the oldest and most widely used calendar system in India for religious and cultural purposes.

Hindu festivals, panchang, vrat dates, and muhurat — all are based on Vikram Samvat. India's national calendar (Shaka Samvat) is different, but religious calculations follow VS.
