The Significance of Adhik Jyeshtha Amavasya

This Amavasya is special on two counts. First, it is the new moon that ends Adhik Jyeshtha, the extra month added to the Hindu calendar in 2026 to keep the lunar and solar years in step. This leap month is also called Purushottam Maas, a month so dear to Lord Vishnu that any worship, fasting or charity done in it is believed to carry many times its usual merit. Second, it falls on a Monday, making it a Somvati Amavasya, which is considered especially rare and auspicious.

Amavasya is the most important day for honouring our ancestors. On this day people take a holy bath at a river or sacred place at dawn, offer pitru tarpan and shradh to remember the departed, and give food, water and clothes in charity. On a Somvati Amavasya, married women also keep a vrat and circle the peepal tree, praying for the long life and wellbeing of their husbands. Falling within the holy Adhik month, all of these acts of devotion are believed to bring blessings, peace for the ancestors, and the grace of Lord Vishnu.

What to Do on This Day

Rise early and take a holy bath, at a sacred river if you can, or at home with a few drops of Ganga jal in the water. Offer pitru tarpan and remember your ancestors with a sincere heart. Give daan, food, water, clothes or whatever you can, to brahmins and those in need. Worship Lord Vishnu, light a lamp, and if you keep the Somvati Amavasya vrat, circle the peepal tree and offer it water. Because this Amavasya falls in the holy Adhik month, even small acts of charity and prayer carry great merit.
